Margaux Stevenson EDC 423 Dr. Julie Coiro October 29, 2009 Book Activity #6 Volcanoes Part B: Workshop Notes AS A STUDENT: Two new ideas I learned about volcanoes:
There are 3 types of volcanoes: Strato, Cider Cone, Shield
There are 1510 active volcanoes in the world
Approximately 15-20 volcanoes erupt each week, including 2-3 volcanoes previously thought to be “dead”
One tip for how to read / navigate the websites I explored:
You can click on any of the blue underlinedwords (“links”) to bring you to a new page that will give you more information about their meaning.
AS A TEACHER: One informational feature I found especially useful and developmentally appropriate for fourth graders studying volcanoes:
Click on the Volcano Explorer link from Discovery Kids link to enter the site. On the left-hand side, if you click the “Build Your Own Volcano & Watch it Erupt Button,” you can do exactly what it says by controlling the gas levels and magma viscosity (both which the site defines for kids). Then they can watch as their own volcano erupts, showing and identifying the: plume, debris, ash and lava.
Part C: Designed Internet Workshop for Grade 4 Learning about Volcanoes Worksheet Objectives: Now that we have read Magic Tree House: Vacation Under the Volcano, we are going to explore more about volcanoes. Using our computers during Internet Workshop time, we are going to use the internet as a tool to expand our knowledge of volcanoes. During this activity you will use the bookmarked websites to answer the questions below. After completing this worksheet with your partner, you will be responsible for sharing the information you have learned with your peers. Learning Facts about Volcanoes: Go to the bookmarked link: http://kids.discovery.com/games/pompeii/pompeii.html and click “Enter” to enter the site. Spend a few minutes clicking on the various links to thoroughly explore the site. Then answer the following questions: a) Name and briefly describe the 3 types of volcanoes: b) Describe the term “Ring of Fire” in your own words: Critical Thinking: Go to the bookmarked link: http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/ and spend some time reading about volcanoes. Then click on the “Find a Volcano” button at the top of the page to see how many volcanoes there are near where you live. Why do you think there are or are not many volcanoes in your area? Your Choice: Continue exploring the above website. Find a link on the page that you and your partner find interesting. In the space below: provide the website address, describe why you found the link so interesting and at least one thing you learned from it about volcanoes. Evaluation Rubric: 8 points: You answered all of the questions thoughtfully, completely & accurately. (4 x 2 points) 2 points: Your answers were in complete sentences with few or no grammatical errors. 2 points: You worked collaboratively with your partner. 2 points: You shared your discoveries with your classmates. _ points / 14 points = ___%
